The Total Money Makeover, by Dave Ramsey
This book completely changed my life. I was introduced to Dave Ramsey by a family friend that bought Financial Peace University classes for me and my husband as a wedding gift. Thankfully, we went to the classes and they changed the course of our lives, financially, in an amazing way!
When we got married, we had over $90,000 of debt from school loans, a new car, and a credit card. I thought I would always have debt – I thought a car payment was part of grown up life. I had always been told, “You’ll always have a car payment.” Not true!
We Didn’t Have a Financial Plan
Dave’s class opened our eyes to see that we didn’t have a financial plan and we really needed one if we were going to someday change our family tree. Nope, we will never have a car payment!
We jumped in with both feet, and became gazelle intense to pay off our debt. Both of us got extra jobs and we lived on rice and beans. All our debt was paid off in just over 18 months and we will never be in debt again! I’m quite proud of how hard we worked to pay off all our debt, it was not easy, but we did it!
The best part about The Total Money Makeover is that we have been married almost 18 years, and we never fight about money – we don’t have a reason to. We are on the same page with our finances, so there is no need to fight about money. Get this book and get your personal finances in order – you won’t regret it one bit.
Debt Free Degree, by Anthony Oneal
After you get your personal finances in order and decide to become debt free, then you must get Debt Free Degree by Anthony ONeal. I’ve just finished this book and it has me very fired up! Because we don’t live our lives with debt, we don’t plan to have our kids incur debt either – especially for college.
We have talked about this idea of going to college deft free for years and now that we are about to have a high school freshman this fall, the whole idea of having a debt free plan for college is even more necessary.
I’m so glad I found this book and at just the right time! In fact, I’m a little behind (but thankfully, not too much). Anthony says the best time to start planning for college is in 6th grade. There are many steps you can take, starting in middle school, to begin the process of college planning.
Set A Plan Of Action
This book does such a good job of laying out a plan of action to ensure your student can receive a deft free degree. Yes, it will take a lot of hard work. Yes, it will take time and planning. But, it’s very possible to graduate without debt and I’m very excited to see this play out in my family over the next few years!
If you have a middle schooler – get this book! If you have a high schooler and are trying to figure out your college plan – get this book! There are many practical tips on scholarships, grants, ACT and SAT testing, college comparisons, and advice for students and parents on how to earn a debt free degree. Plus, it’s an easy read – only about 200 pages.
The Money Saving Mom’s Budget, by Crystal Paine
Crystal Paine is the creator of MoneySavingMom.com and author of many money saving books. I especially love this book, The Money Saving Mom’s Budget, because she outlines exactly how a stay a home mom can afford to be stay at home mom!
WISH PLANNING A PARTY WAS A PIECE OF CAKE?
A lot of people think that they can’t get their finances in order unless they start making more money. I’ve met many moms who desire to be a stay at home mom, and they just don’t think there is any way to make it work living with only one income.
“It’s not the income that is a problem, it’s how the money is spent that is the problem.”
-Katrina Rauch, Frugal Fun Mom
I’ve found that a lot of times, it’s not the income that is a problem, it’s how the money is spent that is the problem. Money slips through your fingers without a budget and Crystal helps show you just how to set up a budget with the income you do have.
She will help you afford being a stay at home mom – even if at first glance it looks like there will be a big deficit to overcome. Her book is filled with oodles of practical tips on how to save money in every nook and cranny of your life. All stay at home moms need to read this book!

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, by Marie Kondo
I can just imagine the look on your face right now. Katrina, why this book? That’s not a finance book. How is it going to help me save money?
You are right, it’s not a finance book. It’s a book about tidying up your home and your life. Here is why I love it though – I’ve found that when you have your life in order, you will save money, and you might even earn some money too!
I read this book about 4 years ago and I loved it! At first, I thought it was simply about ways to declutter your house, but it was so much more than that. I did declutter my house, from top to bottom, but after that, it led me to declutter so much more of my life too! It may sound silly, but organizing and decluttering my home led to so many new money making opportunities! Plus, my house was nice and tidy, and I love that feeling!
Not Just Decluttering Your Home
In fact, Marie’s way of folding clothes is amazing! So much so, that my 10 year old daughter has adopted the technique and swears by it! I still fold my clothes exactly how Marie recommends (just look in any of my drawers), and I don’t think I’ll ever go back to how I used to do it, of just stacking all my clothes haphazardly in a drawer.
I’d recommend this book as a great way to get started with organizing and decluttering your home. As you declutter, you will find many things you can sell, and this might be the first way you earn some money as a stay at home mom.
After you read her book, have a garage sale! You also might discover that once your home is chaos free, your creative juices start flowing more freely. You might be flooded with ideas on how you can start earning an income at home – so that you can remain a stay at home mom! I can speak from experience on this one – trust me!

I’m not saying you have to start a full time business, I’m thinking more of a smaller scale business idea you might have. Like maybe starting an in-home daycare, or an in-home bakery.
